JEE Main is held twice a year — Session 1 (January/February) and Session 2 (April). Both produce separate merit lists. If you appear in both, NTA uses your best NTA Score (percentile) for the final All India Rank. Appearing in both sessions is strongly recommended as it significantly improves your chances of a better rank.

NTA Score = (Candidates who scored ≤ your score ÷ Total candidates in that session) × 100. It normalises raw scores across shifts and dates so candidates tested on different days are compared fairly. A 98.5 NTA Score means you performed better than 98.5% of all appearing candidates in that session — not that you got 98.5% of questions right.

For top NITs (NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal) under All India Quota, General category candidates typically need 99+ percentile. Home State Quota may open at 97–98 percentile at some NITs. You can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years with two sessions per year — a maximum of six attempts. The three-year window begins from the year you appear for or pass Class 12. There is no additional attempt cap within these three years. A gap year and repeat attempt is completely valid.

Paper 1 has 90 questions — 30 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has Section A (20 MCQs: +4/−1 marking) and Section B (10 numerical, attempt any 5: +4/0 marking). Total: 300 marks. Duration: 3 hours. Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) have different patterns with a drawing test.

There is NO minimum Class 12 percentage for JEE Main registration. However, for admission to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs through JoSAA, candidates must have scored 75% aggregate in Class 12 (or be in the top 20 percentile of their board). SC/ST candidates need 65%. IITs also require 75% or top 20 percentile for JEE Advanced-based admissions.

Register on jeemain.nta.nic.in: (1) Sign up with mobile + email; (2) Fill the application form — exam city, paper type, academic details; (3) Upload photo (3.5×4.5 cm, white background) and signature; (4) Pay fee online — Gen/OBC ₹1,000 for one paper, SC/ST/PwD/EWS ₹500, females ₹800; (5) Download application number. Session 1 registration opens typically in November.

Eligibility: (1) Top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories in JEE Main Paper 1; (2) Born on/after October 1, 2001 (General/EWS/OBC-NCL); (3) Must have passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026; (4) Should not have been admitted to an IIT earlier; (5) Maximum two attempts at JEE Advanced. Meeting JEE Main cutoff does not automatically register you — you must register separately on jeeadv.ac.in.
